Explains everything you want to know.
The short of it is that the phase noise you want to consider for audio is 100Hz to 40kHz. That will be going as a recommendation into one of the AES specs. Actually I think it is an informational document, not a standard, AES12id-2006.Chris Caudlenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963718918139647263.post-63682568528867076712010-02-19T10:14:41.608-08:002010-02-19T10:14:41.608-08:00You are correct, the ESS Sabre 9008 demo board has...You are correct, the ESS Sabre 9008 demo board has a 40MHz crystal. I greatly improved the sound on one by removing the crystal and it's two caps, then wiring in a Crystek oscillator.

There is a discussion on that in the Sabre thread at DIY audio, posted in spring of 2008.

Even the C3391 sounded better than the crystal. I used that one first because I had one on hand at the time, a 49.152MHz C3391.

I am sure the CCHD oscillator soldered by surface mount to a PCB with a good ground and power plane sounds even better. That is what I have on my own Sabre design.RossLhttp://home.roadrunner.com/~rossl/diyaudio.htmnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963718918139647263.post-34639047540739170562010-02-17T06:42:37.108-08:002010-02-17T06:42:37.108-08:00Cool story you got here.
